Is daphne a black name or white name?
I always consider a Daphne to be a middle class, bleached-blonde white woman with shoulder pads who works as an executive, and has a flamboyant personality.
A Daphne sticks two fingers up to the world out "goes out for a smoke" as she pleases. She laughs a smoker's laugh, and says things like "That's so 1990, dahhrling!"
Reply:southern, meaning either way.

Is Daphne Loves Derby the next Dashboard Confessional?
I've heard it said, I would like to know what you peeps think.
Is Daphne Loves Derby the next Dashboard Confessional?
hm, daphne loves derby is great, however, i think secondhand serenade is starting to break through as well, i think they may give daphne loves derby a run for their money
Reply:Kenny, lead singer of DLD, was my neighbor and I would always hear him playing next door...... I am sort of stuck here, cuz both DC and DLD r great, but ill have to say DLD because of how they came from a little band in Washington to a now well known band. I think DLD will soon grab DC fans attention.
Reply:i think i actually like daphne loves derby better. i never was a huge dashboard fan but i really like dlb. so i guess theyll be the new dashboard, only better.
Reply:no, DC is amazing and will forever STAY amazing.

Reply:i love daphne. They are more original, more creative than Dashboard i think. But I'm just a sucker for little-known bands, so maybe I'm biased. I don't really like Dashboard.

On Daphne Du Maurier's Rebecca?
I have to do a seminar on the setting in Rebecca and was wondering if anyone had some good discussion questions I could ask my class about the setting.
On Daphne Du Maurier's Rebecca?
Ask . "How does the first line of the novel make you feel?" Pax- C
Reply:The novel opens on the continent - how does the setting influence the characters %26amp; the beginning of the story. Discuss Manderlay as a place to live. How does this contrast with the Riveria? How would you cope with the presence of Mrs. Danvers %26amp; the ghost of Rebecca. The Cornish coast %26amp; the sea are important too; they add to the atmosphere.

Who was married to General Browning, of Arnhem fame, designed the beret for the British Airborne!
Do you know of other famous people that did something for the armed services without being a member of same?
Daphne Du Maurier.......?

Reply:arrgh..I forget her name, but she was a Movie star during WW2, and she designed some sort of equipment or something that was very useful for intelligence.
Reply:Bob Hope. He did shows for the USO, and travelled all over for it. Did wonders for the soldiers' morale.

Daphne or Velma?
I'd pick Velma...she has the brains, the glasses, and you know there's a killer body under that bulky sweater.

velma
Reply:Velma is cool.
Daphne is a slut, in my opinion.

Daphne, Is she the world cleverest woman.?
Once again if you don't watch Eggheads, don't answer.
Daphne, Is she the world cleverest woman.?
I try to answer her questions in the back of the Radio Times. She is certainly very smart!
Reply:no, she is the world's luckiest. If you watch 'Sale of the Century' from the 1970's, she even appears on that. She's also been on 15-1. How can somebody get accepted onto so many shows? You're not telling me she's just a run-of-the-mill member of the public! She's been on more game shows that I've had hot dinners. Very strange, don't you think?
Reply:we're not all dim wits i'm affraid. lol

Reply:Daphne from Scooby Doo? Possibly so.
Reply:seems to have a lot of spare time but yes knowledgeable

Daphne or Thelma?
Which of the 2 chicks would you like to be in an old haunted house with? Or in back of the hippy van?
Daphne or Thelma?
dude, daphne AND thelma! duh..
Reply:Velma is her name. And I would pick her because smart chick with glasses are sexy!
Reply:i pick daphane cuz thelma is short and has thick glasses
Reply:Definitely Velma! I bet she's hot when you take off the glasses and let down the hair a bit and get rid of that turtleneck.... ;)
Reply:I think Velma is way cooler then Daphne because Daphne is kinda wimpy at times and is very danger-prone.
Reply:This is a toughie. Daphne was definitely hotter, but Thelma seemed smarter and after I get between those thick thighs of hers, we could actually have a good conversation and I wouldn't feel bored. Oh and those glasses? Quite sexy. Put me down for Thelma (actually her name is really Velma).
Reply:Velma is a nerdy chick, %26amp; i like some nerdy chicks, so i'd pick her over daphne. also daphne is a prep, i have no time for preps.
Reply:I would want to be stuck with Velma, because she seems much smarter than Daphne, and also she is able to figure out who committed the crime. Therefore, Velma would be a much greater help in figuring out how to escape a haunted house.
Reply:Daphne for a few ngihts but if you're into "diamon in the rough" go for Velma. Sides, she strikes me as the type to go both ways.
Reply:Hmm- Velma or what not (Thelma?)- I used to love Shcooby Doo-Doo when I was younger and crap. Did you ever see the one episode with Jerry Reed? That was cool, man. Yeah- Velma- she'd be fun to hang out with at freakshows and other amusement distractions...or go to metal show @ Masquerade. :)

Daphne Du Maurier wrote "Cornish Gothic" novels, but can anyone think of other authors who used the genre?
I don't know about Gothic, but Rev Sabine Baring-Gould wrote a lot of novels set in Devon and Cornwall. His " In the Roar of the Sea" is set around St Enodoc and reminds me very much of Dapne du Maurier's Jamaica Inn. It was published in 1892, and is not the sort of book you would expect a Victorian Vicar to write.
Daphne Du Maurier wrote "Cornish Gothic" novels, but can anyone think of other authors who used the genre?
Try some Jonathan Aycliffe , particularly The Vanishment
List of books here

Reply:Victoria Holt (also known as jean Plaidy) wrote a lot of Gothic novel, some of which i think are set in Cornwall.
Winston Graham's 'Poldark' series were set in Cornwall, though I am not sure they are Gothic, a bit maybe.
'I Capture the Castle' is NOT set in Cornwall, it is set in East Anglia, which is a very long way from Cornwall and about as different from Cornwall as you can get, East Anglia being mostly quite flat, and Cornwall being all hills and cliffs and moors.
Reply:Dodie Smith wrote " I capture the castle" set in Cornwal in a castle!
Reply:R.D. Blackmore's *Lorna Doone* is Devonish Gothic.

Daphne would break Betty Rubble in 2 - don't let Daphne's passiveness fool you.
We are referring to Daphne from Frasier - not some other Daphne from the past - correct?

I need help for mythology.I need a list of defenses for apollo in the daphne/apollo case.?
I need to have a list of defenses like if apollo was in a case and i was his attorney, so i need some defenses to help him win the case based on the apollo/daphne story in mythology or other stories
I need help for mythology.I need a list of defenses for apollo in the daphne/apollo case.?
Cupid is the real criminal here.
Apollo was as much a victim as Daphne
All Apollo did was run after and try to talk to the girl.
Apollo was poisoned/ drugged by cupids golden arrow
and Cupid shot Daphne with his lead one.
if not poisoned / drugged by cupid.
Apollo would not have chased after Daphne
he would have stopped when she said no..
if not poisoned / drugged by cupid
Daphne would have been willing to at least stop running and listen to Apollo.
Reply:Apollo could go for the temporary insanity plea. He was insanely in love with Daphne.
The old defense that she was asking for it usually doesn't work in the courtroom, and since she's a laurel tree, she has no way of testifying in this matter

Hi, im taking latin honors and am currently translating the story of Apollo and Daphne?
i would try www.freetranslations.com
Reply:If you're studying the original "Metamorphoses", try the Perseus Library. This is a well known classics site that provides both the originals and their English translations.
Here's the link to the story of Apollo (Phoebus) and Daphne, which starts at line 452 of Book 1 (1.452). The link will land you at the Latin version and I suggest you use the "Brookes More English" translation for reference.

What will happen to man who killed, Diane White Bitterman, in a car wreck, Daphne,Alabama?
The crash happened on 11th may... Christopher Watt was taken to hospital that day..but released the same day.. so obviously he wasn't injured much...The third driver was uninjured..
No charges have been brought ..the crash is still under investigation..but it is unlikely to bring charges..
Reply:Why would NO charges be made in this crash involving "Diane White Bitterman %26amp; Christopher Ross Watt" ? He killed a woman, I do NOT understand the above saying "but it is unlikely to bring charges" ? Should be an indictment and charges, in this case, why not ? Report It

Does anyone know the name of the second book to "rebecca" by Daphne Du Maurier? its not by the same author.
There are actually two different books. The first is actually a sequel--"Mrs. Dewinter" by Susan Hill Long. I don't think this one received very good reviews. Here is an Amazon.com link:
http://www.amazon.com/Mrs-Dewinter-Susan...
The other one, which was meant to be a companion book, not a sequel, is "Rebecca's Tale" by Sally Beauman. Here is a link at Amazon.com
http://www.amazon.com/Rebeccas-Tale-Sall...
I have always been afraid of reading both because I liked "Rebecca" so much. I don't know if anything could follow up the original. In any case, the ending of the Rebecca was such that I didn't think a sequel was necessary. I wanted to imagine my own possibilities.

This sequel to Daphne du Maurier's Rebecca depicts the further adventures of Maxim de Winter and his second wife.

What happened to Maxim de Winter and his second wife after Manderley burned? This suspenseful "completion" of Daphne du Maurier's Rebecca begins with the couple's return to England, following a ten-year, self-imposed exile, for the funeral of Maxim's sister Beatrice. In a voice true to the original story, Hill's Mrs. de Winter chronicles Rebecca's continuing shadow on their life: a mysterious wreath bearing a card with the initial "R" is discovered near Beatrice's grave, and unwelcome visitors include Jack Favell, who has visions of blackmail, and Mrs. Danvers, who seeks revenge. The narrator's happiness with Maxim is threatened by his first wife's invasive presence. Can she protect him from the past, or will Rebecca's murder be avenged? Sure to please du Maurier fans, this is highly recommended for public libraries. Previewed in Prepub Alert, LJ 6/15/93."
Reply:Yes the title is simply..."Mrs. DeWinter"
Reply:There's also Rebecca's Tale by Sally Beauman, sanctioned by the Estate as the sequel.

Please read my honors english report about the book Rebecca by Daphne Du Maurier?
The assignment was to research the literary term gothic and describe how Rebecca fits this defenition. please tell me what i should change or how it sounds
Rebecca
A gothic novel is characterized by horror, violence, supernatural effects, and medieval elements. It is usually set against a background of gothic architecture especially a gloomy and isolated castle. Rebecca by Daphne Du Maurier, fits the definition of a gothic novel perfectly. In this book we follow the lead character, a young woman, as she marries a wealthy man and goes to live with him at his estate where his last wife died. It includes many of the elements required for gothic literature.
The setting for much of the book is at Manderley, a large estate belonging to Maximilian de Winter, one of the lead characters in the book. While it is not very clear on whether the architecture was gothic, it can be said that Manderley was not isolated. Many people came to visit the lead characters throughout the book, and a ball was even held. The atmosphere at Manderley, however, was very gloomy due to the death of Rebecca, Maxim’s first wife. The head maid at Manderley, Mrs.Danvers, was very close to Rebecca and felt as if the lead character was trying to take her place. The lead character feels as if Rebecca is still there, and that she will never be accepted. All this while Maxim is acting very distant, and the lead character decides that he is still grieving the death of Rebecca.
Another gothic element in the book is when we learn that Rebecca did not drown like everyone thought, but was murdered by Maxim. Maxim and the lead character spend the rest of the book trying to cover up the murder. Rebecca is a wonderful gothic novel.

I think you've done a great job in summing up "Rebecca" and comparing it to various gothic terms. The only thing I could think of to add would be perhaps something about Maxim's appearance. I seem to remember that the narrator did a sketch of Maxim very early in the book; she seemed to see him in a medieval, Middle Ages kind of way, as someone being from that era. Other than that I think you've done a fine job. :-)

Anyone in Vancouver, Washington? I'm looking for my friend, Daphne.?
Daphne Eaton and I went to school together years ago, but we've since lost touch. I found a site that said she lives/lived in Vancouver. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Anyone in Vancouver, Washington? I'm looking for my friend, Daphne.?
I think it would be best to check out the phonebook website. Here's the link:

The result page shows:
http://findaperson.canada-411.ca/search/...
There are no results for the name in Vancouver, so it could be possible she may not live there anymore. I don't know her age, but if she is old enough, she could be married and have a different last name.
I noticed you mentioned Washington, and there were some results for that query. The results are in the link below:

Game cube: how can dirk beat the dragon and save daphne? and in dark alliance I'm stuck after the crypt, help!
Thanks! It's a 2-part question. I can't remember the game title but it's the 3D version for Game Cube that features Dirk the Knight and he must rescue Daphne. I got up to the big Dragon at the end but can't find his weak spot. What do I do?
Also for Game Cube, it's sort of a role-playing/action game called Dark Alliance. I've searched the crypt, the cellar, and both levels of the sewer. I noticed that at the end of the cellar there is a hidden room with a treasure chest but I can't access it. I really don't know how to proceed in the game and feel like I'm going in circles. Thanks so much if you can help!

Is there anything I need to do to my Daphne plant right now?
I live in Zone 4 (Minnesota) and I had planted a Daphne (Carol Mackie) this year. I want to make sure it will come back next year and was wondering what I need to do to make sure it doesn't die over the winter. Please help if you can. Thanks!
Is there anything I need to do to my Daphne plant right now?
There isn't a lot of care involved. If it makes you feel more comfortable you could add a thin layer (1") of mulch around the plant. However keep in mind that many daphnes, including Carol Mackie, are notorious for dying suddenly for no obvious reason, even in good soil with excellent drainage.

Another question about the myth of apollo and daphne...?
did Apollo see Daphne turn into a tree?
if he didn't, how did he know that she was a tree?

Another question about the myth of apollo and daphne...?
Yes, she was transformed into a tree just as he was about to grasp hold of her.
E.g. as depicted in this famous statue by Bernini :

The ancient Roman writer Ovid tells the story in great detail :

In 1976, adult ground finches (Geospiza fortis) from Daphne Major in the Galapagos were measured for their wing size. The mean wing size was 68.09 mm, total variance was 56147 mm (sample size=481). The mean wing size in the next generation was 66.15 mm. Given that wing size has a heritability of 0.84, what was the selection differential?

Homework help!!!!HAS ANYONE READ REBECCA BY DAPHNE DU MAURIER???
HAS ANYONE READ REBECCA BY DAPHNE DU MAURIER???
This is my assignment%26gt;%26gt;%26gt;%26gt;%26gt;
How would you categorize the mood? Furthermore, how does she achieve this effect? In other words, what textual elements work to set the mood, and how does it affect the story?
Homework help!!!!HAS ANYONE READ REBECCA BY DAPHNE DU MAURIER???
Well, first of all, the question is a fairly broad one and mood/atmosphere can sometimes change throughout the story.
One way you can look for mood is through the author's diction (word choice) and sensory details (sight, smell, touch, taste, hearing). If you are looking closely at the author's writing in addition to reading for plot, you may see that a pattern is emerging in the atmosphere.
Generic Example 1
The silence enveloped the room; it encased me and cut me off from the reality of where I now stood. A single, cold bead of sweat trickled alongside my temple and my eyes darted a million paths straining for both confirmation and denial of what might be lingering in the room.
Mood words: "silence enveloped" "encased" "cut me off" (also personification) "cold bead of sweat" "trickled" "eyes darted" "lingering"---all provide a mood of fear of foreboding.
Generic Example 2
The quiet of the room lit me with a kind of giddy anticipation. I could scarcely believe I stood in the middle of of a melange of fanciful streamers and gilt-ribboned gifts. My eyes glanced the room a million times, never lingering too long on one gift or another, but taking in and being amused by the notion that I had arrived too early for my own surprise party.
Mood words/phrases: "giddy anticipation" "fanciful" "gilt-ribboned gifts" "glanced" "amused"--all of these together could suggest a mood of mirth/happiness.
You might try not only looking at Du Maurier's novel as a whole, but try breaking it down into some scenes which evoke a similar mood. In those scenes does the author use sensory details, figurative language (metaphor, simile, personification, etc.), symbols, unusual punctuation (dashes for example) or sentence structure (long/short, periodic or cummulative sentences) in a pattern or way to create a mood?
Reply:try using spark notes.
here's the website, it got methrouhg all my highschool and most of my college english classes. Good luck!

How do you feel about the name Daphne?
I want to see what people think of it. Trash it, praise it, go for it! We're thinking Daphne Margaret. Margaret is a family name for me, and we won't be changing it.
How do you feel about the name Daphne?
I think it's a great name! It's not on the list of names I'm hoping to use someday, but it's definitely on the list of names I admire and frequently recommend.
It has always seemed like a rather European choice to me. It reminds me of a Belgian friend I had in elementary school, and it also makes me think of Daphne Moon on the show "Frasier" (the nutty psychic physical therapist from Manchester).
I have always loved the name Margaret, and I think it makes a fabulous middle name for Daphne.
Reply:I have nothing against daphne margaret, but daphne is a name that apparently isnt "hip" any more.Like my sis's name was daphne and she got teased for her name alot. I dont get it, but ther are just some names that arent kool among the little ones.
Just trying to help
Reply:Really, really love it. Margaret is gorgeous, Daphne is even more gorgeous. It's such an underused mythological name, I love the story and the meaning 'laurel'. The only thing turning me off from it is the potential nickname 'Daffy' but I shouldn't think many people would call her that.
Go for it. ;)
Reply:I love the name Daphne. It sounds feminine and old fashion without sounding dated. There are never a lot of Daphnes around so it when you call her name only one kid, not twenty will turn around. I think it is lovely.
Reply:it reminds me of scooby doo, you know daphne the crime solver and the rest of the gang, i like it=]
(she was also the pretty one)
Reply:I love Margaret, you can call her Maggie! ( I love nicknames.)
Daphne makes me think of an old lady for some reason.

Who know some good books by Daphne du Maurier?
I already read Rebecca and I'm planning to read their sequal Rebecca's Tale and Mrs. de Winter, but do you guys know any other books by Daphne du Maurier?
Who know some good books by Daphne du Maurier?
I loved "The House on the Strand" - man invents a drug that takes you back in time - fourteenth century or so. But, here's a twist - only his mind is in a castle in the Middle Ages - his body is still in the twentieth century with automobiles, technology, etc., but on the same spot as the castle was.

Reply:My Cousin Rachel by Daphne du Maurier is really great! I have to tell you that at the end of this book you are not sure of the real character of Rachel. Was she good or evil?
Jamaica Inn is another book by Daphne du Maurier, as is Frenchman's Creek. She also wrote the short story - The Birds - which Alfred Hitchcock made into a movie.
There are a lot of other short stories and novels that Daphne du Maurier wrote. You can check here http://www.fantasticfiction.co.uk/d/daph... for a complete list.
I hope that helps.

Where can i see this show (daphne in the brilliant blue) online?
Its an anime show
In the future, water has covered much of the Earth due to the effects of global warming. The orphened Maia Mizuki (水樹マイア Mizuki Maia), 15, just graduated from middle school and has already applied for employment in the elite paramilitary Ocean Agency, part of the futuristic world government. Only the best, most intelligent, and physically fit students are eligible for admission. Maia, the series' protagonist, is set to become one of the few.
But her ideal life quickly falls apart. To her disappointment, Maia unexpectedly fails her entrance exams. Making matters worse, she promptly gets evicted from her house, pickpocketed, taken hostage, then shot. She is "saved" by two women (Rena and Shizuka) that are part of an unorthodox help-for-hire organization called Neres, a possible derivation of the Greek mythological Nereids. With nowhere to go, Maia joins up with Neres, taking jobs from capturing wanted criminals to delivering ice cream, often with unexpected results. Gloria and Yu later join up with Neres.
"Daphne" in the title refers to a subplot that starts midway into the series and eventually become important to Maia. "Brilliant Blue" refers to the fact that this is a world covered by water with almost no land. The world consists of vast oceans, a few islands, and floating cities.

Reply:I don't think is sounds like it but they do have a similarity. You might want to consider what nick names she will get with the name Daphne.
It is possible that she somehow gets stuck with the nick name Daphey because they are somewhat similar sounding. I don't think Daphey is a bad nick name at all and I personally wouldn't automatically associate it with Daphey Duck. If you don't like that nick name or have a problem with it you may want to reconsider.
I like my name but I have noticed people like pick out nicknames or shorten my name in some way regardless of weather or not I tell them that I prefer to go by my name as is!

Reply:Daphne and Daffy are two completely different names. I suppose if a kid has a particularly corny sense of humor, they might call her Daphne Duck. But, I highly doubt the name Daphne will make her a subject of ridicule.

Who wrote the myth of Daphne and Apollo?
Who wrote the myth of Daphne and Apollo? I'm having to write a refutation.. therefore having to blame the AUTHOR.
Can someone please help me?!
This progymnasmata paper for my 7th grade English class is due monday, april 21, 2008. and I would like to have it done for tomorrow.
Just leave the name of the author and a source if you have one!
Please and thank you!
Who wrote the myth of Daphne and Apollo?
There were several versions of the myth.
Ovid's is the most famous. Presumably he himself had a Greek source for his story, although whatever that was it is no longer extant. A Greek writer named Philostratus says the story was an old Arcadian legend.
A greek writer named Parthenius gives a summary of another version of the story, quoting two earlier (lost) poets named Diodorus of Elaea and .Phylarchus.
For the original texts see :
http://www.theoi.com/Nymphe/NympheDaphne...
Reply:Given the nature of Myth no one actually "wrote" the myth as such. Instead it is a story that has arisen, been moulded and changed through a number of tellings.
There is very little information on Daphne and Apollo however it seems to be most comprehensively written about in "Metamorphoses" by Ovid (Its found in Book 1). I think this is the most detailed written account of the myth and therefore probably can be referenced. Just make sure you make it clear that you understand that "myth" is a fluid concept. You can buy a penguin version of the Ovid, its a classic.
Reply:Graves' Greek Myths says that the earliest written version date to the Hellenistic era so the story in its literary form is post classical but may have an earlier oral source.
The story is found in Apollodorus 1.7.9, Plutarch's life of Agias 9, Hyginus' Fables 203, Pausanias 8.20.2, and 10.5.3. and two more authors you willnt be able to find online Parthenius and Tzetzes.
It also appears in Latin in Ovid's Metamorphoses 1.5.452.
You should be able to find free etext versions or library books of Plutarch's Loves and Ovid's Metamorphoses from several sites. I think there is a free etext version of Pausanias and Apollodorus somewhere on line.
Try to Google all those authors since there are several sites making classical texts available for free downloads.
There may well be some I hanvt found yet!
If your school or town library is limited is there a college or university library nearby?
Reply:the myth....according to a book of a saint here whoi poreviously was a wizard..the gods are visions..did by demons..they showed up this way..like and Afrodita..walking naked and dissapearing....
i do not know there should be some books about it but probably they are rare..it needs specialist in theology who worked on the old texts..of saints..which are credible
Reply:The original creator of the story is unknown--these myths were passed down by word of mouth for generations.
The most widely known written version would come from Ovid, "The Metamorphoses".
Reply:The Myth of Apollo and Daphne
from Ovid to Quevedo:
Love, Agon, and the Grotesque
Mary E. Barnard
I hope this is what ur looking for. if it isn't trygoing on google
Reply:I really don't think there is a specific author. You might google it. But, to refute the myth...read it and take it apart point by point. The author isn't very important.
