In Daphne du Maurier's Rebecca what does the character Maxim de Winter symbolize?

I'm talking about the original story. Not the sequels. I could care less about them.

In Daphne du Maurier's Rebecca what does the character Maxim de Winter symbolize?
Many things ... a father/lover figure for the narrator; a part of English history; in the end the blindness of love. He is partly a reference to Mr Rochester in Charlotte Bronte's "Jane Eyre". If you have read that book, "Rebecca" takes on new meaning.
