Apollon reaches out to grasp the Nymphe Daphne who escapes his pursuit, transformed into a laurel. Her womanly form is shown in the process of metamorphosis, with legs replaced by trunk and head and arms sprouting branches. The god carries a bow.

Reply:o that's easy Daphne was a forest nymph who caught the attention of Apollo. Apollo fell in love with her but she rejected him, so Apollo pursued her but she had to run in order to get away. During the middle of this chase she asked her river guardian father to help her and he changed her into a Laurel tree. Apollo loved her so much that he took her leaves and branches and made a Laurel crown which become Apollo's symbol and crowned important people in Greece and Rome.

For protection, her father Peneus, turned her into a laurel tree. In her honor, Apollo created a wreath from her leaves. The wreath, since called a Daphne, remains a symbol of excellence.
