In what extent did the book Rebecca by Daphne Du Maurier seem believable to you ?

basically, if you think the book seemed believable ..

why do you think it is ? or how do you think the romance / conflict in the novel seemed believable ?

It is a good deal more believable than most Gothic novels. I can see such a story possibly happening in the time period in which the novel was written (the 1920's or 30's, I think?) but not today. Today there are too many resources for a woman in a tense situation like that, and I think men tend to be more sensitive to their wives' feelings these days as well.
Reply:well, I liked the part about the orgy, and the zebra with the enormous penis.

but the rest was hard to believe.
Reply:The emotions of the heroine were quite believable and her reactions were consistent with her personality traits (she was shy, insecure, she was way over her head in some respects as her new husband was both wealthy, high class, and quite older than she was). She was also living in the shadows of her first husband's wife, who was idolized by the housekeeper from hell and absolutely gorgeous (the heroine in Rebecca was average looking, more on the plain Jane side of the scale and she was fully aware of it).
Reply:I love that book, it's a great story. It was all the characters, they all seemed believable to me. The nasty housekeeper, the shy woman so in love constantly comparing herself to an ex who was as nasty as her housekeeper, but she doesn't know this and glorifies the woman. I've met characters like those in real life
Reply:This is one of my favorite books! The main character's insecurity and feeling of never fitting in is something that everyone can relate to. The romance element is also believable. Shy, young woman working as a traveling companion -- it is indicated in the story that she does not come from a high class, wealthy background -- meets a dashing, wealthy man who sweeps her off her feet. When reading it, you can feel the whirlwind of emotions that she felt while falling in love with him and running off to get married. I also loved how she had to hide the romance at first from the woman who employed her.
