Comments on the book "Rebecca" by Daphne DuMaurie?
This wonderful novel introduced me to Daphne Du Maurier's books, and I am so glad it did.
Although it was written a while ago, every page is a fresh to the reader as if it was written yesterday. It could be taken from any time, and any place.
Haunted by the ghost of her husbands first wife, and in fear of her Housekeeper, Mrs Danvers, this novel explores the twists and turns of a young wife as she struggles to feel excepted into her new life.
This is not a family saga, nor a slushy romance novel, instead it is a gripping tale that takes you on a terrifying journey, and keeps you guessing all the way through. Haunting and juicily gothic. The plot certainly holds its own but it's the characters and their relationships that make this book so intriguing; I would highly recommend this book and it's author.
Reply:I only bought and read it because my name is Rebecca, but it is a good read.
Reply:I read the book after viewing Alfred Hitchcock's movie "Rebecca - The First Wife", starring Laurence Olivier %26amp; Joan Fontaine (1940). A charming movie -- but the book is more complex.
Reply:Excellent book. Quite a few years ago the BBC filmed a version with Jeremy Brett as Max DeWinter, and it was shown on PBS here in the US. Unfortunately, the BBC says they have no plans to release it on DVD. So, read the book first, and then watch Olivier and Fontaine in the movie version.
Reply:I enjoyed this book for the most part. I believe the novel has a really good plot and i can honestly say that it was somewhat unpredictable. you'll enjoy this book if you have an interest in romantic or mystery novels. i personally found the ending to be a little corny, but other than that it was pretty good.
Reply:I had to read it for a class and enjoyed it very much.
Reply:It's a mystery novel, a thriller. There's romance, a murder, an investigation and a trial. And of course, the famous first lines: 'Last night I dreamed I went to Manderley again..."
It's certainly worth reading!
Reply:In my opinion it is a wonderful "Country House" (Book where the house is so crucial that it becomes a character on its own). Although it was written in 1910, it similar to most Victorian novels, such as Jane Eyre. In fact the storyline is very similar to Jane Eyre because Du Maurier is inspired by Bronte (I read somewhere). However, the element that made Rebecca more intriguing is that it combines certain Romantic sentiment with Gothicism. Also, unlike Jane Eyre, it is not too stretched out and is more mysterious. What I liked most about the book is that its attention to detail is impeccable because it feels that you are into the story. Furthermore, it focuses on the mystery and intrigue behind the house and its former mistress. In conclusion, it is very good book. In fact it made it to the Radicliffe top 100 novels. To me, this is my favorite book.
By the way, Hitchcock's Rebecca is brilliant (even thought the book is better). The movie is great because Laurence Oliver and Joan Fontaine were really good in the movie. Moreover, Hitchcock followed the book in most part (except for one cause the FCC disapproved of it)
Reply:I loved it. The plot has the right kind of "thrill" and the female hero is realistic enough to make you feel "close" to her.
Reply:A very very good book, I can't put into words how great it was, yay. you must read it.
